All-Gifted

According to Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did, using water and earth. The gods endowed her with many talents; Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, and so forth. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted". *

TIME magazine recently released their top 50 web sites, and one of these, pandora.com, caught my attention. Pandora.com is an internet radio station unlike any other radio station. In fact, it is actually multiple radio stations that you create to fit your interests. If you go to pandora.com you can enter a group or song that you like, and it will immediately find that song, or a song by that group for you to listen to. After that, the site will play you songs from random groups that sound like your artist. For instance, a search for Third Day yielded their hit "Cry out to Jesus" followed by Audio Adrenaline, Todd Agnew, Reuban Morgan, Delirious? and a new group for me, The Turning. The site is absolutely unbelievable. Not only do you get to listen to your favorite artists, but you get to discover new artists and songs.
You may be wondering how this works, and it is an amazing process. It was started by the Music Genome Project that basically mapped out musical characteristics in songs just like you map out a gene. They looked at melody, harmony, lyrics, orchestration, and many other characteristics and grouped similar songs together. The process is ongoing and they are continually analyzing new groups and mapping their "genes."
Now, there are a couple of catches. After a few songs, they require you to register, but the registration is free. After that, you only have to put up with occasional advertisements. But it is well worth it.
So, to open a box of mystery that will never cease to satisfy, surf on over to www.pandora.com
